New Year, New Approach

New Year, New Approach
Posted by Carl Baumann, Worldwide Director of Sales

New Year's Day has always been a very sentimental day for me. As I sit here and write my first blog post for Good Migrations, I can't help but to state the obvious, “time really flies".  I stare in awe at how quickly my kids are growing and how fast life progresses. During the year, finding time to reflect is very difficult considering all of the uber-important work meetings and conference calls that I’m involved in on a daily/hourly/secondly basis. When I finally have some down time to reflect on how fast life moves, I can finally take notice of some of the constants in life.

The one constant that really occupied my thoughts today is CHANGE. Change is now my constant in life. In the past, I’d resist change and fight it. I mean, who really likes change? Change is unpredictable, absolute, and full of unknowns. Change is downright scary and devoid of any real answers about what will happen in the future. Life would be so much easier if everything just stayed the same. As I grow older (and hopefully wiser), I’ve come to accept, and even embrace, change. Over the past few years, everything that I have known has, in fact, changed. My personal life and work life, in one form or another, has changed. At this point in my life, change is exciting and full of surprises. I have accepted change, warts and all, and embrace it. Change and I now understand each one another.

Change doesn’t just apply to my home and personal life; it finds me at work too. Entering into my 14th year at Binary Tree (has it been that long?), I can clearly see the company moving into new and exciting directions as we grow as a company and innovate as a leading technology company. Our Co-CEO, Steven Pivnik, identified the history of change within Binary Tree in his original blog post. He outlined the past, present, and future of Binary Tree in three short, but impactful sentences:
Binary Tree has always been about change. We assist our customers in changing from one email platform or application to another. Binary Tree's reputation in the market has typically been tied to our expertise with Lotus Notes and Domino, particularly around migrations. Our migration software was the first series of products that helped us become a true leader within the industry. With any migration project, there’s the need for coexistence, so our coexistence software was developed and helped change (and there’s that word again) Binary Tree from a migration company to a true a messaging company. Of course, Lotus Notes is more than just mail. Our customers soon asked if we could assist with Notes Application migrations. So, we changed again and offered software to assist with Notes application assessments and domain/server consolidations. Wow, that is a lot of change that really happened quite fast!

Today, we see a great change in the market and a very ripe opportunity for Binary Tree. Here’s why:
  1. Through much internal research, we determined that over 50% of the current Exchange user base is still on Exchange 2003. Why? Because many companies struggle when migrating/upgrading from Exchange 2003/2007 to Exchange 2010.

  2. Microsoft has no plans to streamline their current migration/upgrade tool to streamline the migration/upgrade from Exchange 2003/2007 to Exchange 2010.

  3. Several Binary Tree partners within our partner eco-system are seeking out our assistance to help them manage these manual and difficult Exchange upgrades.
Based upon our research and requests from our partner community, we decided to change product direction and develop E2E Complete. As Karl Sand, Global Microsoft Relationship Manager, outlined in his blog post a few weeks ago, our recently released E2E Complete product enables a managed migration approach and streamlines the transition to finish the project both quickly and painlessly.

E2E Complete is also changing the way we work with our partner community. The goal of E2E Complete is to be 100% channel driven. We fully realize that Exchange expertise exists right within Binary Tree’s partner community and it certainly behooves us to work very closely with our partners and fully enable them to sell E2E Complete. We are very excited about this product and the positive impact that it will have on the profits of our partners.

Binary Tree is a company that embraces change and helps customers easily transition through platform transition projects. We’re no longer going to be just the "Lotus-guys" with that funky expertise surrounding a very specific platform. No, it’s again time for a CHANGE and I am looking forward to it.

If you’re a Binary Tree partner or a prospective partner, please contact us to discuss how to get started selling E2E Complete.
